The city is situated about 22 miles north of Manhattan and five miles from the New Jersey border. The city was originally called Paascack by the New York & Erie Railroad, after a nearby stream of the same name. In 1842, residents changed the name to Spring Valley after a large spring at the Valley Pond. Scotsmen who had settled here named it Paascack and Scotland, their native country. President Theodore Roosevelt even visited the town in 1914, and spoke at its Lyceum.
